College Football Newsletter: How Many CFB QBs Can You Name?
Seriously, we want to know. Follow the honor system.
Welcome to The College Football Newsletter, where we can name 30 starting college football quarterbacks with ease.
Last week, NFL RedZone’s Scott Hanson went on Rich Eisen to talk about the NFL Network’s acquisition by ESPN. He claimed that while fans of the New York Giants, for example, can name every starting NFL quarterback, the same can’t be said for college football fans. Well, I put it to the test by asking Richard and Alex if they can name some starting QBs off the top of their heads:
Even Hanson, the king of seven hours of commercial-free football, had to give them props for being ball knowers over on Instagram:
Congratulations to Auburn on the seven national championships they won this week.
Auburn announced that it's now claiming national championships from the 1910, 1913, 1914, 1958, 1983, 1993, and 2004 seasons. That’s quite a victory lap, but they’re not stopping there with the festivities. They’re also retiring Cam Newton’s No. 2 jersey this season during the Georgia-Auburn game on October 11. The 8 Ways to Smoke Out a Fake National Title Claim
College football history is loaded with BS national championship claims, as well as some non-consensus claims that AREN’T ridiculous. How do we tell the difference? What patterns emerge when we look …
New from Split Zone Duo this week:
If you’re checking this email before your podcast feeds: 1) thank you for reading and 2) the SEC preview episode just dropped on Thursday.
The Big Ten Preview is here, and so is Rodger Sherman to break things down. There are still too many teams in this league, but that means this episode is even longer, clocking in just under two hours.
In case you missed it late last Friday, Alex had Jane Coaston on to banter about the consequences of the Michigan sign-stealing scandal.
For Slate, Alex wrote about the new ESPN direct-to-consumer app that they want you to get (unless you already have ESPN through cable, in which case ESPN does not want you to go DTC). Big CFB-viewing ramifications here.
For Opta Analyst, Alex has written previews of a bunch of conferences. These are like short companions to the podcast previews.
CBS Sports Network announced that Richard will be one of their sideline reporters for the upcoming season. (Editor’s note: Heck yeah.)
Speaking of the season, there’s one more sleep until college football is here! Rest up, stay hydrated, and enjoy Week 0. And if you’re anywhere near Raleigh, N.C., the crew would love to see you at the Sports Podcast Festival on Saturday. Use code SZD for 25% off tickets.

I can name all the P4 starting QBs and most of the AAC. Should be noted that I’m in the middle of my weeklong college football fantasy draft so it’s top of mind - surely I’ll lose some of the information in the coming weeks.
Hey, it's a Hector post!!
I'd also honestly be hard-pressed to name 30 of *any* category of athlete without some kind of mnemonic aid, like giving me their initials or number+team or something. It's just a hard thing to do off the dome.
I've spent most of my summer mainlining sportscar racing, and to a lesser extent F1, and I still couldn't name more than one driver for any given IMSA team.
Anyway, congrats to whoever that guy is with whatever point he's trying to make, I guess?
