There are some seriously deranged Auburn fans on Twitter for this one. This is the stuff I like most from SZD, and if Ohio State ever hired an absolute shit stain of a coach, I would be begging y'all to shout about it from the rooftops. I don't get the defensiveness when the team you root for does bad stuff or hires bad people.

Good pod. I live in Maryland and one thing that's jarring to me is that this seemed like it happened not that long ago in real life, but viewed in football terms of the coaching hiring/firing cycle or even the recruiting cycle it was ages ago. Durkin is on his third job since! And people can say what they want about Locksley, but he has really worked hard to repair relationships and he isn't running that kind of team.

I thought this was an Auburn Observer piece at first because you used the exact same title Ferg uses whenever there's a new coach/player.

The merits/demerits of Durkin aside, I'm kinda flabbergasted that Auburn was willing to take the optics of hiring Durkin after already hiring Freeze. Read the room, y'all.

Great job Alex. Always wanted to hear you speak about this. Any place that hires Durkin in my eyes is hiring a stain. Inexcusable. Seems fitting of course this time around it was Freeze

This one was very well done by Alex and tough to listen to just because of how awful and avoidable what happened was and the complete failure of everyone involved, I'd heard about the story but not the full details. In particular, I didn't know that Maryland tried to bring him back for a day and that was unbelievable to me (although maybe not surprising).

I'm wondering, does Chris Low get the scoop in exchange for not talking about Maryland? Further, Rick Court's website cites a testimonial from a Maryland QB despite completely omitting his tenure at Maryland.....interesting and very weird.

I'm also interested if anyone has anything whether podcasts, academic articles, etc. talking about the way toxic masculinity links into endangering the safety of young men in sports in particular. Obviously there's a lot of reasons that things like this happen but one at least in my experience I've found feeds into a very toxic idea that endangering one's safety in a fashion like this is "manly" or "tough". I'm not sure if there's stuff written or spoke on this but if anyone has read or listened to anything I'd be interested in it, thanks for the great episode Alex

Interesting pod. The most interesting thing to me is how Durkin is viewed by other coaches. Given what Muschamp said (and the fact he keeps getting hired), it makes me wonder if this is really just common practice among coaches. I would be curious to know if Durkin diverged in any way from what other coaches do.

Coaches think that Durkin got a raw deal. For some reason, I listened to a podcast series about Nick Saban after the death of Jordan McNair, and they kind of glorified the conditioning drill that the Terps were running when McNair collapsed. It's a grueling drill, where you run 110 yard sprints over and over again, up to 16 or 17 times, and it's much more likely that coaches view McNair as the problem and not the drill.

It’s really hard to be a conscientious Auburn fan right now, but thanks for speaking truth.

Alex, I don't know how / where to ask this but is there going to be any resolution to/ for the premium episodes posted on Spotify or where we just need to download and listen here? I've used Google but that is going away in April. Thanks. Great episode.

I am optimistic that we will have Spotify functionality in the near future. Overcast is also a good one.
