College Football Newsletter: Dan Lanning Remembers
And apparently Temple coach KC Keeler does too.
Welcome to the College Football Newsletter, where we show you our trash-talking on the field.
Every college football team is different, with their own goals for a game and the season. But there’s one thing that everyone can agree on: Pettiness remains a driving force for the long season. Just ask Dan Lanning, who put up a 69-3 score against Oklahoma State after Mike Gundy said Oregon was spending more on players than them. Lanning responded with “We spend to win,” and they definitely did that. The Ducks face Northwestern this week. One would assume that the margin of victory won’t be as big as last week, but you never know. (Also, as Lanning pointed out, Gundy didn’t say much about the Pokes’ resource advantage over Week 1 opponent UT Martin. Maybe the Skyhawks are just rolling in it.)
Another team using comments as motivation this upcoming week: Temple, against Oklahoma. But this bulletin board material didn’t come from any Sooners players or coaches. Instead, they’re from Oklahoma reporters who got caught talking about the Owls’ chances against the Sooners on a hot mic. Temple coach KC Keeler responded to the comments on a radio show: “You don't understand, there is a different energy in our building right now.” Let’s see! If Temple can give OU a run as a 21.5-point underdog, maybe you can find motivation anywhere.
Here’s what the SZD crew dropped in your feeds this week:
This week’s Tasting Menu has two guests. Along to guest-host with Alex and Richard is Northwestern’s own Rodger Sherman.
For the Main Course of the Tasting Menu, Graham Coffey of Dawgs Central joined the crew to talk about Georgia and their upcoming matchup against the Vols.
For subscribers, Alex, Richard, and Rodger talked about why so many rivalries come back … only to die again. How can this be avoided?
For subscribers, Alex and Richard discussed two teams that are down pretty bad early in the season: Florida and Virginia Tech.
Our hosts also write stories about college football and non-CFB subjects:
Richard posted a behind the scenes clip of how CBS Sports HQ produces their show, complete with more screens than you've ever seen. It’s a fascinating look into how many people it takes to have everything flowing smoothly.
For Opta Analyst, Alex wrote about Oklahoma being (sort of) back. How back? We’ll see.
Thanks for reading. Take care of yourselves, have fun watching this week’s games, and we’ll see you for Sunday’s Hurry Up, presented by Dad Water.
