College Football Newsletter: Running of the Bulls
USF brings in the season with a bang, and so does Split Zone Duo.
Welcome to the College Football Newsletter, where we hope you got a few hours of sleep after those Thursday Week 1 games. Run over the rest of this week like you’re Byrum Brown. What a performance for USF to start the year, beating Boise State 34-7 and reshuffling the Group of Five before Week 1 Saturday. As USF coach Alex Golesh said afterward, channeling the late USF hoops coach Amir Abdur-Rahim: “This ain’t the same old South Florida anymore.”
Split Zone Duo’s episodes almost always start with “Thank you, Lee,” and this newsletter will be no different this week. With Lee Corso making his final College GameDay appearance this Saturday, we’d just like to say it: Thank you, Lee. From everyone at Split Zone Duo, thank you for making this world of college football fun and lighthearted all these years.
Richard and Alex gave a much more eloquent and in-depth tribute on the podcast this week, so please go check that out. (It’s at the 43:48 mark of that link.)
We made you a lot of stuff this week
The first Tasting Menu of the season is here, including a longer segment on Notre Dame vs. Miami with Jessica Smetana.
Nate Tice joined Richard to explain what makes Arch Manning so good. (Hint: He’s not like Peyton and Eli).
Jason Kirk, Richard, and Alex had their annual FCS Upset Draft. Which FCS team will upset an FBS team? Well, UT Martin was picked twice so we’re officially rooting for the Skyhawks to shock the college football world this season.
Host emeritus Godfrey paid a visit for the Time Capsule Prediction Special.
Elsewhere in the college football world:
For CBS Sports, Richard interviewed Syracuse head coach Fran Brown, who continues to stay true to himself as he enters Year 2 with the program.
Mike Craven talked to Mack Brown, Vince Young, and Drew Kelson about the last time Texas played at Ohio State. The Longhorns play the Buckeyes for Big Noon Saturday.
USC Football is unstoppable (in the video game)
Kofie Yeboah made a YouTube video for our channel! It’s on the 2004 USC team that was dominant in real life, but was somehow more dominant in NCAA Football 2005. It’s safe to say that we won’t see a team like this anymore, both because of the nature of college football now but also because of video game patches.
Follow our YouTube channel. We are nearing 5,000 subscribers! Follow Kofie on your preferred social media platform.
Thanks for reading. Get some rest, because we have a fully loaded college football Saturday ahead of us. We’ll see you on Sunday, for the return of the Split Zone Duo Sunday Hurry-Up, presented by Dad Water.
